What is the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)?

The domestic RHI scheme is a government-led, long-term environmental programme designed to encourage homeowners to generate heat from renewable sources, by providing a generous tax-free financial incentive for every kilowatt of ‘green’ heat generated, every year for 7 years. The scheme will help the UK meet EU targets to reduce carbon emissions and secure the future of Britain’s energy supply. Read more

Biomass for homes

Case study: homeowners Jeremy & Rachael

Homeowners save £1,300 a year – and earn £21,000 in total RHI payments – with biomass

ClientJeremy & Rachael
We installed...ETA PC 20
Annual fuel saving £1,300+ (oil vs. pellets)
Annual RHI income£3,000

Professional couple Jeremy and Rachael wanted a sustainable heating system to go into their new home. The current oil boiler was becoming very thirsty and unreliable, and it was time to say goodbye…

They heard about us from a friend…

A previous biomass cusLime-Circle ETA boiler installation in hometomer recommended Lime-Circle to the couple, and we were invited to assess the property and come up with a proposal. Jeremy had already carried out research and was favouring a German or Austrian manufacturer. After seeing an ETA PC 32 installation of ours he was convinced that an ETA boiler should be installed into his dream home.

The house has little or no insulation and due to its construction, it would be difficult to reduce the heat loss. A detailed survey of the couple’s habits and the home’s heat requirement pointed to an ETA PC 20 being the idea choice.

The existing boiler was housed in a utility room but as with every home, space is at a premium and so the idea the boiler could be located outside in the double garage was very appealing. The ETA PC 20 has open protocol so controlling the boiler from the house was taken care of.

The couple were getting through more than  £2,300 worth of oil a year. The predicted pellet consumption of their biomass boiler is less than £1,000 per year, aided by the web-enabled control systems controlled by their smartphones. And thanks to the newly launched domestic RHI, the couple will receive a tax-free income of £21,000 over the 7-year period.

Property with Lime-Circle biomass boiler installation

The installation took just over a week and the couple were only without heat for four hours while the old system was swapped to the new. Highly insulated pipes join the boiler and hot water cylinder to the house, all controlled by wireless and web-enabled  systems, giving the ultimate in heating control.

So in summary, they are saving over £1,300 a year on fuel costs and will receive £21,000 in RHI payments – all while doing their bit to save the environment. Why wouldn’t you chose ETA and Lime-Circle…?

Biomass boiler and solar thermal installation create dream eco home

ClientRyan, Nottingham
We installed...A 36 kw Grant Spira biomass boiler with three zones for efficiency
Solar thermal panels
Annual fuel saving£800
Annual RHI income£3,300 or £23,100 over 7 years

Lime-Circle biomass boiler installation in NottinghamRyan and his wife approached Lime-Circle as they wanted a heating solution that was not only efficient but also slotted in with their desire to become greener as a family.

The husband-and-wife fighter pilot team were in search of a country property to renovate and transform into their dream home. Eventually, the couple found their idyllic country home in North Nottinghamshire. The only downside to this property was the greedy, inefficient oil boiler with accompanying unsightly oil tank.

Due to the size and nature of the property, after our site survey we recommended  a biomass heating system broken down into zones to deliver heat at a reasonable price.

Creating a separate room for the heating unit

We placed the boiler and all heating ancillaries within a small room to the side of the property. When installing a new heating system we strongly suggest creating a mini plant room to house the essential heating units. This allows easy access for any future system changes, repairs, maintenance and fault finding.

Biomass boilers + solar thermal panels = the ultimate ‘green’ home

Included in our renewable system design is a 300ltr twin coil solar hot water tank which, when coupled with solar thermal panels, will provide the majority of the family’s hot water during the warmer months. Solar thermal panels are included in the government’s RHI scheme with a tariff rating of 19.7 pence.

This will give Ryan and his family an extra income of £800 – £1,000 a year for seven years and will reduce the running hours of the boiler massively.

Biomass boiler installation plugs gaps in existing eco heating system

ClientJamie
We installed...26 kw Grant Biomass Boiler
Annual fuel saving10 pence per kw
Annual RHI income£2,684, or £18,788 over tariff period

Loft extension specialist Jamie went green over three years ago, having a heat pump, solar thermal panels and a rainwater harvesting system installed in his newly extended high-end dormer bungalow.

But his experience with green energy installers wasn’t a positive one. The original installation company had massively undersized their heat pump unit, which meant that it wasn’t big enough to heat his home adequately. This led to the family shivering through two cold winters…

Our brief: “Make my family warm this winter!”

Before any installation, we always carry out a heat loss calculation so we can correctly size the heating system that will be needed. The Biomass boiler installation saves homeowner Jamie moneydormer bungalow had a mixed system of underfloor heating and radiators to heat their home. Our heating solution was a 26kw biomass boiler located some 30metres away from the household, set up to support their mixed heating system.

We laid highly insulated pipes into a trench and connected them to where the heat pump was originally situated. Heating circuits were used to switch the boiler on using the cabling laid within the ground pipe, with relays to stop back feeding from the internal and external pumps.

Jamie and his family now have a reliable and controllable green heating system that meets their needs – and most importantly, they’ll be kept warm this winter…

We can connect a biomass boiler to all sorts of different heating systems – to find out more, call Lime-Circle on 0115 952 0263 or 07890 022002 or complete our contact form, and one of our renewable energy experts will be in touch soon…

Biomass and solar thermal installation creates dream eco-home that pays

ClientJason, Nottingham
We installed...32kw ETA biomass boiler with 1,500 litre thermal store, plus 4 solar thermal panels
Annual fuel saving£3,400 (electricity vs. pellets and solar)
Annual RHI income£5,300 - which all adds up to £37,000 over the 7 year domestic RHI scheme

National construction company manager Jason researched sustainable heating solutions carefully and meticulously before choosing Lime-Circle to install biomass and solar thermal in his large country home.

He chose us to replace his electric under floor heating thanks to our broad expert knowledge of heating solutions and our specific experience in designing systems incorporating biomass and solar.

A careful retrofit into a stunning newly refurbished home

Biomass boiler installation in eco home, NottinghamThe home was already finished to a high standard, so we undertook a careful and considered retrofitting program, installing some 20 radiators with minimum impact on the property and its occupants.

The boiler itself – an ETA 32kw, chosen for its quality and the fact that its network connectivity means it can be controlled remotely from anywhere in the world – and the 5 ton fabric pellet store are sited in the garage some 18 metres away from the house. We connected the boiler to the property using high performance insulated pipe, which was dug and laid by us.

Near infinite hot water on demand – partly heated by solar

We designed the system to include a 1500 litre thermal store, which, thanks its size and the capabilities of the boiler, supplies Jason’s home with an almost endless supply of hot water at mains pressure.

The thermal store is linked to the 4 solar thermal panels we installed and which mean that, during the warmer months, the boiler is only needed to top up the heat in the tank, making the whole system extremely cost-efficient and environmentally sound.

A steady income

Because we are accredited under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), from spring 2014 Jason will get paid for heating their home using renewable energy sources. These tax-free payments come from the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) pot and are incredibly generous.

The biomass boiler will earn Jason £4,300 a year while the solar thermal panels will deliver £1,000 a year, a giving a total guaranteed income of £5,300 a year for 7 years, on top of the savings made by switching from electricity as the main heating source.

Biomass boiler & solar thermal cut fuel bills by 1/3

ClientRoy and Anne, Hall Barn, Nottinghamshire
We installed...Grant Spira 9-36 Kw biomass boiler with a Grant Duo Wave tank, Honeywell wireless controller and Grant Sahara solar thermal panels.
Annual fuel saving£1,088.76 (oil vs. pellets)
Annual RHI income £4,750

Retired business owners Roy and Anne needed to replace their ageing oil thirsty boiler.  Having already fitted a photovoltaic system to help with electricity costs, and in receipt of good tariff payments, they decided to look into the government tariffs connected to home heating. Realising that very generous payments were made for installing either a heat pump or wood fuelled boiler they contacted Lime-Circle for some free no obligation advice.

Domestic biomass boiler with fuel hopperWe carried out a detailed investigation into their requirements including an in-depth calculation of the heat loss in the building. Due to the age and stone construction of the barn conversion and its low insulation values, a heat pump system was ruled out. The property lent itself readily to a wood burning boiler installation, but the occupants were at first worried by the cleaning and loading aspect of this sort of boiler. However, when presented with the option of a wood pellet boiler which only requires the ash pan to be emptied once a year and has automated fuel loading, they decided this was the way forward – especially when we told them that, based on their current use, they’d receive government tariff payment in the region of £4,750 a year for 20 years…

Their biomass boiler more or less takes care of itself

The boiler itself was installed in an outhouse with a government installation grant of £950. The pipe work to feed the heating system was buried under the garden and discreetly enters the house. The boiler is controlled from the house and the internal system was re-zoned with wireless controllers giving total control to the owners. The fuel to the boiler is delivered once a year into a bulk hopper, which feeds the boiler automatically, the only engagement the owners have with the boiler and fuel is the checking of the wood pellets level once or twice a year.

Solar thermal panel installers, NottinghamSolar thermal panels part-heat their water, saving energy

Continuing on their quest to be less reliant on unpredictable fossil fuel prices, Roy and Anne decided to have two solar thermal panels installed to help heat their hot water. During the spring months, the panels have already heated the hot water tank to 45 degrees Celsius, which means the boiler only has to raise the temperature in the tank a further 10 degrees, rather than the usual 55 degrees that a system without solar thermal panels would demand. The solar thermal system comes with a government installation grant of £350 and a Feed in Tariff  payment in the region of £500 per year -and, of course, results in obvious big savings on their bills

Biomass boiler more than halves fuel bills at Green Barn

ClientGreen Barn, Derbyshire
We installed...Eco Angus 40kw biomass boiler with 2 x 1000 litre AKVATERM tanks and a Honeywell programmable room controller
Annual fuel saving £1,840 (oil vs. logs)
Annual RHI income£7,930 - combined with the fuel savings, that's £55,510 over 7 years from an installation that cost £30,000.

Green Farm is barn conversion, recently beautifully restored and updated by its owners Pete and Lynn. The barn had an existing central heating system powered by an oil fired boiler.

Lime-Circle biomass boiler installation in a barn conversionLime-Circle designed and installed a 40 Kw Eco-Angus Biomass log boiler system which was coupled to two 1,000 litres buffer tanks. The buffer tanks make provision for mains pressure (33 litres per minute) hot water demand. These tanks also allow an efficient burn protocol under low load conditions.

The fuel store and boiler room make use of an old existing barn adjacent to the main house which was undergoing restoration. The whole project was carried out by Lime-Circle using their own plumbers and registered Part P electricians, and because we are accredited by the MCS, the project qualified for the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

Our biomass boiler installers keep Green Farm warm in the depths of winter

Year round performance

During winter months, the boiler is filled with clean hard wood logs twice a day, heating a six bedroomed barn and suppling plenty of hot water for the four bathrooms and kitchen. In the summer, one or two burns a week fill the tanks with enough heat to meet the barn’s hot water needs. The two highly insulated Akvaterm 1000 litres tanks only have a 2 degree loss ratio per day. The heating for the house is controlled by a simple thermostatic programmable controller which, when required, will put the system into slumber mode to save more fuel.
