Specialist heating dilemmas require a specialist company to solve them… College Farm is a stunning collection of manufacturing workshops, a 500-year old converted barn, a medieval manor house and a thatched cottage with the kind of uber-modern extension that wouldn’t look out of place on Grand Designs. It’s a really special, unique place – which poses a set of really unique heating challenges…

Biomass pipe installation on farm

College Farm itself dates back to the 15th century. Some of its buildings are Grade 1 listed. And eco-minded owner Ben wanted to heat all 5 buildings from one carbon-neutral heat source, using fuel from his own woodland.

Biomass installation at College FarmProviding a district heating scheme to deliver efficient heat to some 5 zones, all with differing heat loads, is a specialist task and this was a really prestigious project, so we were delighted when, after seeing some of Lime-Circle’s installations, Ben invited us to take it on.

We’ve undertaken quite a few district heating installations – some under contract to other heating companies, others direct to customer.

Thanks to the 20 years’ experience in the heating and building trade that underpins our extensive biomass knowledge, we were able to take an objective, holistic view of the challenges and provide a road map to a sympathetic and careful delivery of a heating installation.

We installed a 90Kw ETA hack boiler, to be powered by wood from the farm’s woodlands. The system is designed to cope with 5 separate properties, all with massively varying demands for heat. Rather than having one large pump, we built a manifold that distributes heat to each area as and when required, making it much more efficient. Some 250 meters of highly insulated pipe were laid into the ground to provide the properties with the biomass-heated water.

Biomass boiler installation in listed propertyBefore we installed the ETA, the farm was spending some £4,000 a year on oil – but now they’re  self-sufficient and burning wood they already own, they’re on track for a huge reduction in their fuel bill.

Saving thousands on your fuel bill every year – and not being held to ransom by the Big 6’s price rises – is one thing. But this installation –  and indeed all Lime-Circle biomass installations – delivers more.

It qualifies for the government’s renewable heat incentive (RHI) and will provide Ben with a projected yearly return of £10,170 per year, every year for the next 20 years – guaranteed.
