I was lucky enough to grow up as part of the farming community – everyone should get the chance to see for themselves the hard work that goes into putting food on the supermarket shelves. Many of the farms put on special activities – things like guided tours, trailer rides, meet the animals and special activities for children – and also give an insight into the routine tasks that make up daily life for a farmer.
But it’s more than just a great day out for the whole family. Visiting your local farm on 8 June is a great way to show your support and appreciation for the UK’s farming industry.
I was going to list all the farms in and around Nottingham taking part, but there’s just too many – it’s brilliant to see how well-supported this event is by the farming community. Make a note in your diary, find a farm, dig out your wellies – and go!
Visit the Open Farm Sunday website to find out more. The Visit a farm page lists farms taking part near you – and it’s not too late for farmers to register their farm and open it up for locals to enjoy.
